We are so lucky to have our Mystery Readers visit our classroom. The students continue to enjoy the books that are shared. Some new favorites are "Pippi Longstocking" and "The Day the Crayons Quit". It is also fun to have our readers answer questions, and share information about their jobs or facts they provided. Mrs. Molly Anderson brought in supplies to show how to make snow and ice for staging photos. So cool! There are opportunities to read every Monday. We are looking forward to more visits over the next several months. Please contact us if you are interested in participating.
Before winter break, we had a very special visitor, Gregory McNaughton. Mr. McNaughton is a faculty member at Reed College and teaches the calligraphy course that both Mrs. Gilkey and I have been taking for the last few years. We thoroughly enjoy this form of writing! In class, we have been practicing italic letter forms in preparation for calligraphy. During his visit, he covered a brief history of the alphabet discussing Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, etc. The students learn that letters developed from pictures. The students were introduced to our new edged pens that were generously donated by the Portland Society of Calligraphy. We worked through the alphabet in italic and then in italic calligraphy. We continue to tell our students that practice is the only way to improve this art form. They are already noticing their improvements!
In December, our Parent Led Art volunteers returned to conduct a lesson on glazing pottery. The students learned which colors in the pallet would change color during the firing process in the kiln. Some students chose a rainbow of colors and others remained monochromatic. We can't wait to see the final products!
