A big thank you to Jessica, Rowan's mom for doing a clay project with our class! The students are creating beautiful clay mugs to share hot cocoa or tea in to celebrate community. The first day of the project was spent making a pinch pot for the mug shape and then attaching a handle. Students used various tools to create texture on the outside of their mugs. Jessica will be back in a week to teach the students how to glaze them.

On May Day, May 1st, the students created beautiful arrangements of flowers and made paper baskets to put them in. These were delivered to our neighbors in the community. It was so fun to see the smiles on people's faces when we arrived on their doorsteps with these special deliveries.
Our students put their heart and soles into running for our school. Thank you to everyone for your contributions to this fundraiser for the arts. Just a reminder all money should be collected and and returned by May 18th.
Our field trip to Oxbow Regional Park was terrific! We started the adventure in a grand coach with air conditioning and comfy seating. Our class decided that is the only way to travel from now on. We we arrived we were greeted by several education volunteers. We split into 5 groups and toured the banks of the Sandy River and the old growth forest in the area. We looked for various animal and insect tracks, macroinvertebrates in the water, invasive and native plants, and watched birds of prey in the sky. Our students had the opportunity to try edible plants and to identify many things during our scavenger hunt. What an amazing day filled with lots of learning and great weather outdoors!
Over the period of three days, our artist in residence, Karrie Kent, helped our students create these amazing clay puppets. On day one, clay was formed around the bottle to create the bodies. Heads, hands, and feet were also formed out of the clay. On day two, students painted the clay. On day three, students used felt, feathers, fur, and other embellishments to create the body covering. The students are so proud of these little critters. We will be holding on to them for a final presentation after they have researched their pollinators and written their reports. You all will be invited in for a gallery walk. Stay tuned!
All of the members of our wonderful school participated in a Peace March on March 14th. The students created beautiful posters to walk the school yard with, we sang a song about peace and diversity written by our music teacher, Ms. ZWB, then topped it off with our Llewellyn School song. Wow! What an impactful experience this was for every member of our school community!
Last Thursday and Friday, we had Pedestrian Safety Education brought to us by The Street Trust. Emma, our instructor did an in class presentation the first day sharing the rules of the road and how to's for various situations that will occur when being a pedestrian. On Friday, we took to the neighborhood streets to practice crossing with crosswalks and without, as a whole group and as pairs. Our students learned some valuable information over the two days. Please talk to them about being safe on our neighborhood streets and the importance of communicating with drivers by using their hands, voices, and body language.
Our 2nd graders looked and sounded fabulous last month singing in the choral concert on Jan. 23. You can still order a copy of the cd through the office for only $5. Proceeds go to support Llewellyn's music program.
Today was our 100th day of school! Can you believe it? All of the of these awesome kiddos are 100 days brighter! The students worked on a 100 day activity checklist throughout the day. All of the brain breaks had them up and moving for 100 reps with jumping jacks, marching, jumping rope, tossing and bouncing balls, etc. The students created something new using the number 100 and wrote creative stories about their drawings. They also worked together to make 100 in 100 ways using addition, subtraction, money, and even multiplication. They also read 100 words, sentences, or pages and wrote 100 words or more. We also didd 100 piece puzzle to encourage team building and working together. To top it all off we used a photo app to age the kids to 100 years old! See if you can find your own little elder below :)
Yesterday was Valentine's Day. We did several math activities using candy conversation hearts to practice graphing, analyzing data, patterning, and practicing coin identification. In the afternoon, we had a wonderful celebration full of craft making, gratitude, valentine themed activities, BINGO, and healthy treats and sweets treats galore! A big thank you to all of the parents who volunteered in the classroom and contributed yummy snacks!
