Sarah Ferguson, a local muralist, has been working with all Llewellyn's students to create a giant, mixed media mural for the building. The theme is the Sellwood/Westmoreland neighborhood. All of the classes had an opportunity to brainstorm ideas that would best represent the neighborhood and community. Our class decided to create the farmer's market. First, the students painted squares of Tyvek, a durable, waterproof paper. Then, they cut the Tyvek into shapes to build the scene. We are anxiously awaiting the installment of the mural in the main hallway.
This year, our class has partnered with Mrs. McIntyre's 1st grade class to become their reading buddies. Not only do the students read to each other, they also participate in art activities and other fun projects. They kids have built some great friendships with one another. The fourth grade students are wonderful role models for them too.
The students learned how to knit on a loom during the winter months. Some of them knitted hats and some knitted scarves. When they finished, they embellished them with pom poms or flowers. Many students are now knitting from home! Here is a picture of some of the final products.
Our Llewellyn parents have been so generous with their time to teach and assist with the Parent Led Art program. The students have been studying the art of Leonardo Davinci. They have created portraits using half of their photographed face. They used facial dimensions and symmetry in this project. The looked at various botanical items, flowers, leaves, weeds, etc. They drew an item of their choice and then dissected it to draw the parts. The students also constructed buildings out of clay after discussing the architecture of Italy where Davinci was from. The art projects completed have been been beautifully executed, very engaging, and overall a lot of fun!
