Lucas L.'s grandma, Nancy Zadra, visited the class last Friday as our mystery reader and guest artist. She read 3 books, "Where's My Teddy", "I Want My Hat Back", and "Baby Bear's Book". All three books had a bear as the main character. After our specials, she led the class in an art project beginning with sketching a bear using simple shapes. Then, the students used chalk to sketch their bears on large yellow paper which then they were to paint. Nancy helped them create new colors and taught them techniques for mixing them directly on their paper. The final pieces are just incredible! A big thanks to Ms. Zadra and Edward LeClaire for visiting our class!

The students created flags to test the wind strength outside. This project required them to use fractions for the different segments of their flags and weather related symbols too. The class has been recording weather observations and collecting data on temperature, rainfall, wind, and cloud types using internet resources as well as hands-on experiments.
We are working on a multi-step, mixed media art project. We started with drawing tree trunks and branches with sharpie. Next, we are using oil pastels to create spring, summer, fall, and winter scenes. The oil pastels are blended using baby oil. Finally, we will do various watercolor washes over each scene. These projects will be added to our weather lapbooks, a compilation of all our weather artifacts.
Last Friday, we started our day with reading by finger light. The kids chose good-fit books and settled in to read. We had several requests to do this again soon :) Looks fun, doesn't it?
To supplement our study of weather, Mary Loos, KATU meteorologist, visited our 2nd grade classes. She shared information about her job with KATU News, weather forecasting, and answered the many questions our students had for her. It was fun to have a guest speaker on this topic. Thanks Mary!
Debbie Conrad, a 2nd grade mom from Mrs. Cronen's class, visited our class to do a presentation on beavers. We learned all about the physical attributes of beavers and how they protect a beaver in their habitat. Aiden was a champ putting on goggles, orange teeth, fur, flippers, a tail, etc. to represent different parts of a beaver. Debbie also shared lots of information about beaver habitats, habits and several artifacts such as a skull, claws, pelt, and sticks and logs that have been chewed by a beaver. We all have a wealth of knowledge on this animal now!
On December 15th, the whole school gathered in the cafetorium to join together in a holiday sing along. Mr. Robb read a delightful rendition of a Llewellyn Night before Winter Break, followed by performances by the beginner and intermediate MUSE bands. Afterward, the whole school sang a wide variety of popular holiday songs. Many students displayed their holiday cheer by wearing Santa hats and reindeer horns. Even the teachers created their own version of the 12 days of Christmas (12 Days at Llewellyn)! What a fun way to end the last day before winter break!
We hope that you all had a wonderful winter break and are ready for 2018! The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. The 2017 Computer Science Education Week was December 4-10. Our students participated during their library time. We learned a bit about coding while doing off-line activities in the classroom. We learned the vocabulary words: program, algorithm, and binary. Then, the students worked through the Star Wars coding module during our tech time. They had to problem solve how to get BB-8 through various matrices and then created their own games with Star Wars characters using blocks. Through this activity, students learn valuable skills such as problem solving and perseverance. If you would like, you can login to Hour of Code from home and work through additional coding modules with your child. We will be doing more coding activities throughout the year in class as well. The students said that their experience coding was fun and challenging!
In December, we had two Mystery readers, Mark's dad, Chris and Anna's mom, Wendy join us. The kids love asking questions about the facts that have been shared with them. "Dragons Love Tacos", "The Hug Machine", "The Gift of Nothing", and "Of the I Sing- Letters to My Daughters" were some of the great book choices that were shared this month. We even got to hear a holiday story read by Anna's grandparents through a pre-recorded book! What a treat!
